Why Does a New-Build Home Need a Proper Network?

When planning a new home, the network is rarely one of the exciting decisions.

Kitchens, lighting, flooring, bathrooms and finishes understandably receive far more attention. Wi-Fi is often treated as something that can simply be added once the house is finished.

But modern homes rely on connectivity more than ever before.

Televisions, streaming services, phones, tablets, laptops, gaming consoles, security cameras, doorbells, heating controls, solar systems, EV chargers, appliances and countless other devices all depend on the home's network.

And as we introduce more technology into our homes, the quality of that network becomes increasingly important.

The best time to get it right isn't after you've moved in.

It's while the house is being built.

Wi-Fi Isn't the Same as a Network

One of the most common misconceptions we hear is:

"We'll have good broadband, so the Wi-Fi should be fine."

Unfortunately, the speed arriving at your property and the quality of the network distributing it around your home are two very different things.

You could have an incredibly fast fibre connection entering the building but still experience poor Wi-Fi, buffering televisions and unreliable devices if that connection isn't distributed properly.

Modern construction can actually make this more challenging.

Insulation, foil-backed plasterboard, underfloor heating, structural steel, concrete and other building materials can all affect wireless signals.

In a larger property, expecting a single router tucked away in a cupboard to provide reliable coverage everywhere simply isn't realistic.

Start With the Cable

When we're involved with a new-build home, one of the first things we look at is the cabling infrastructure.

Cat6 data cable is relatively inexpensive and straightforward to install while a property is under construction.

Installing it once walls and ceilings are finished is a very different proposition.

That's why we recommend installing wired connections to locations where technology is likely to need them, even if the homeowner isn't planning to use every connection immediately.

These might include televisions, Wi-Fi access points, offices, security cameras, doorbells, audio equipment and other key technology locations.

The cable itself doesn't dictate what technology you have to install.

It simply gives you options.

Why Not Just Connect Everything to Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is brilliant, but that doesn't mean everything should use it.

Where a device is permanently installed and can be connected by cable, a wired connection will generally provide greater reliability and consistency while also reducing the number of devices competing for wireless capacity.

A television is a good example.

Streaming increasingly involves high-resolution 4K content and potentially very high data rates. If the television is permanently mounted to a wall, providing a wired network connection during construction makes sense.

The same principle applies to CCTV cameras, desktop computers, games consoles and many other fixed devices.

The fewer devices unnecessarily relying on Wi-Fi, the better the wireless network can perform for the devices that genuinely need it.

Good Wi-Fi Is Designed, Not Just Installed

In a properly designed home network, Wi-Fi is usually delivered by multiple wireless access points positioned strategically throughout the property.

Rather than relying on one powerful router to reach every room, these access points work together to provide consistent coverage as you move around the home.

Their locations matter.

We consider the size and construction of the property, room layouts, likely usage and areas such as gardens, garages and outbuildings when planning coverage.

The important part is that the cabling for these access points is installed in the right locations before ceilings are closed.

Planning during construction can prevent compromises later.

Think About How We Actually Live Today

It isn't unusual for a family home to have dozens of connected devices.

Think about what might be happening simultaneously on an ordinary evening.

Someone could be streaming a 4K film.

Another person might be gaming online.

Phones and tablets are connected.

Music is streaming around the house.

A video doorbell and security cameras are operating.

A laptop is backing up files.

The heating system, EV charger or solar installation may also be communicating online.

None of these things individually seems particularly demanding.

Collectively, however, they demonstrate why the network has become part of the infrastructure of a modern home.

Do I Need a Smart Home?

No.

And this is an important distinction.

Installing a properly designed network doesn't mean you need a fully automated smart home.

You don't need intelligent lighting, whole-house audio or sophisticated control systems to benefit from good connectivity.

A homeowner who simply wants reliable Wi-Fi, televisions that don't buffer, dependable home working and the flexibility to add technology in the future can benefit just as much from getting the network infrastructure right.

Think of it less as installing a smart-home system and more as installing the infrastructure that modern technology relies upon.

What About Future Technology?

Nobody can predict exactly what technology we'll be using in ten or fifteen years.

That's precisely why infrastructure matters.

Installing sensible cabling routes and data points during construction gives the property flexibility without committing the homeowner to specific products or systems today.

Technology will change.

The cable hidden behind the walls can remain useful through several generations of equipment.

And if you decide in five years that you'd like to add another television, security camera, wireless access point or other connected device, having the infrastructure already available can make that considerably easier.

When Should the Network Be Designed?

Ideally, before the electrical first fix.

This allows the network design to be coordinated with the electrical installation and other building services while cable routes are still accessible.

At this stage we can review the architectural drawings, consider how each room will be used and identify sensible locations for data points, wireless access points and equipment.

It doesn't need to be complicated.

But it does need to happen early.

Treat the Network Like Infrastructure

We increasingly encourage homeowners, architects and developers to think about the network in the same way they think about other building services.

You wouldn't finish a new home and then start considering where electrical sockets should have gone.

Connectivity deserves similar consideration.

The network may be largely invisible once the house is finished, but it supports an increasing amount of what happens inside it every day.

A little thought during construction can provide better reliability from the day you move in and considerably more flexibility for whatever comes next.
